Following on from my previous article about EHRC v BNP, it appears that the BNP might be about to change its membership policy.
From The Guardian:
"It is now crystal clear to all concerned that we simply do not have a choice but to change our membership policy," said Griffin. "Adapt or die is the only decision left to make, for failure to adapt would lead either to our being bled white through the courts or crushed by new criminal laws."
The following quote from party leader Nick Griffin caught my attention:
I have no doubt that it is possible to redraft our constitution so as to ensure we comply with the new law while at the same time holding true to our core principles and most important of all to our purpose – to secure a future for the true children of our islands.
Is the indigenous-only membership policy merely "like a flip side to the Black Police Officers Association" or a core part of the BNP identity? Is the "flip side" a joke, a clever political ruse, or evidence of a racist core? Is the redraft going to be a legal dodge of the EHRC's ruling or a genuine attempt to reach out to the non-white BNP supporters?
I think there are going to be some interesting times ahead, and quite possibly a split within the BNP between Nick Griffin's supporters and hard-liners. There could be some difficult times ahead for the party.
